Why Coaching Matters

Coaching has been a transformative force in my life and ministry. It’s not just about guidance or accountability; it’s about empowering others to unlock their God-given potential. As I reflect on the success of the 100 Families initiative, I see coaching as a cornerstone of our impact.

Early in my ministry, I came across a statistic that struck a chord: ministers with a coach tend to stay longer in ministry. This insight changed my approach to leadership and service. It led me to reach out to my district office, where I was connected with Mary Selzer, a coach who would profoundly shape my life.

My Personal Journey with Coaching

When I first met Mary, I didn’t know the depth of transformation her coaching would bring. We began with in-person sessions, which soon transitioned to regular phone calls. Week by week, Mary guided me with wisdom and grace, helping me navigate challenges and build confidence. She didn’t do the work for me, but she helped me recognize my strengths and align them with God’s purpose for my life.

Even today, Mary remains my coach, and as my assignments have grown more diverse, I’ve added other coaches to my life—each bringing unique insights to specific areas of ministry, leadership, and advocacy.

Coaching in the 100 Families Initiative

As the Coordinator of the 100 Families initiative and Medical Director of His Healing Hands Clinic, I’ve found myself stepping into the role of a coach for the families we serve. Coaching is at the heart of what we do. It’s about coming alongside families in crisis, guiding them as they take ownership of their journey, and helping them discover their God-given potential.

I strive to be a kind and steady voice, leading families not by doing the work for them, but by showing them how to move forward with courage and faith. This approach mirrors what Mary did for me: empowering people to embrace their unique strengths and trust God’s plan for their lives.

The Impact of Coaching on Families

Since the launch of the 100 Families initiative, we’ve witnessed incredible transformations. Families like Lakiva Osborne’s, a mother of eight moving toward stability with the help of our program, demonstrate the power of holistic support combined with coaching.

Through partnerships with organizations like East Side Community Action, local churches, and the Boys and Girls Club of Lansing, we help families access resources, build life skills, and grow spiritually. Coaching amplifies these efforts by fostering trust, resilience, and hope.

Why Coaching is Essential for Success

The success of 100 Families goes beyond services and resources—it’s rooted in relationships. Coaching builds those relationships by encouraging trust, accountability, and collaboration.

In my role, I’ve seen how coaching helps families not only overcome immediate challenges but also lay the foundation for long-term stability and purpose. This aligns with the mission of 100 Families: to address the root causes of poverty and empower families to thrive.
